A holiday in Stromboli
Visiting the active volcano of Stromboli is a unique experience due to its accessibility and beauty. Thanks to the connections offered by Liberty Lines, this island with its rugged slopes is easily accessible. You can admire the lush vegetation and varied fauna and dive into its crystal-clear waters, which are emerald green or deep blue and cover some of the most beautiful seabeds in the archipelago.
It is the farthest and most easterly of the Aeolian Islands. The ancients called it Strongyle, the rotunda. Its still active volcano is about 920 metres tall and the seabed is very deep (1200m). Its inhabitants usually call it "Iddu" (“Him” in dialect), to show that the volcano is part of them, like a very dear person or entity, as if to exorcise the risk of living at the foot of an active volcano.
The crater zone consists of 3 active cones whose volcanic activity is mainly explosive, blasting out lapilli and magma fragments. The lava flows are channelled into a large and steep basin near the sea called Sciara del Fuoco. Stromboli is the only volcano in Europe and one of the few in the world that is characterised by permanent eruptive activity. At night, its intermittent flashes can be seen from a great distance, which is why the island has, since ancient times, been called the "Lighthouse of the Tyrrhenian Sea".
