La gemma dello Ionio
A holiday in Paxos
Paxos, also known as Paxi or Paxoi, was created, according to Greek mythology, by Poseidon, god of the sea, who cut off a piece of Corfu with a lightning bolt in order to create a private corner where he could take refuge with his beloved. It is ideal for a romantic getaway with its enchanting landscapes and white beaches. On Paxos you can get around using public transport, your own car or by bicycle which, given the very small size of the island, is the best and most convenient way to reach the most picturesque places.
The island is reachable thanks to the convenient connections from Corfu with Joy cruises
Love at first sight!
Just over 2,000 people live on Paxos whose capital and main port is Gaios, a beautiful town on the east coast facing the islets of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia. Other beautiful towns on the island are the characteristic fishing villages of Lakka and Loggos, on the north and north-east coast of Paxos.
The best coast to experience the sea around Paxos is this east coast, where there are many small beaches, often made of white pebbles and Mediterranean vegetation offering natural shelter. The sea water is wonderful, transparent and crystal clear, with colours ranging from turquoise to sky blue, emerald and deep blue. Many of Paxos' beaches can only be reached by foot, following rugged paths, or by boat.
