Sanctuary of Montalto

undefined

Thanks to its location and imposing size, the Sanctuary of Montalto is clearly visible from every part of the city. The present building was built in 1930, after the earthquake of 1908 had razed the previous church and the adjoining monastery to the ground.
It is said that the church was built out of gratitude to the Madonna, who during the Vespers in 1282 had defended the insurgents of Messina, protecting them from the arrows of French archers.
Dedicated to the Madonna delle Vittorie (Our Lady of Victories), the Sanctuary shows all the power of Gothic and Romanesque: the two tall twin bell towers enclose the central façade where there is a statue of Our Lady of Victories, made of marble during the 16th century.
