The Specchio di Venere Lake

The Specchio di Venere Lake, so called because, it is said, the Goddess Venus looked at her reflection in it before meeting Bacchus, is a natural lake that fills the crater of a volcano in the Bugeber district, located in the centre of the island. In addition to the fantastic scenery of flora and fauna in which it is immersed, the lake is even more famous for its thermal muds (thermal baths in Pantelleria). There are in fact basins from which water comes out at over 50 degrees centigrade. Covering your body with thermal mud is said to have beneficial properties. The lake is also suitable for birdwatchers as there are frequent sightings, during the migration season, of many species of birds such as flamingos.
