Get back to Sarandë
In the centre of Sarandë are the remains of an ancient synagogue, which seems to have been the first building of its kind in the whole of Albania. Founded by Jewish descendants who settled in southern Albania around 70 B.C., the synagogue was later replaced by a Christian church around the sixth century. Of spectacular beauty are the mosaics from the old synagogue floor, recovered thanks to a long archaeological project that started in 2003. According to the findings from studies carried out by scholars up until now, the recurring symbolism in the fragments found is typical of all the synagogues erected during the period of the Byzantine Empire.
