Mother Church

The Cathedral of St Thomas of Canterbury dominates the Piazza della Repubblica and is the largest place of worship in the city as well as the largest religious building, which is why it is also known as the Mother Church.
It takes its name from the Archbishop of Canterbury, St. Thomas Becket (an English Catholic martyr killed in Canterbury cathedral in 1170) thanks to the close relationship that Sicily had with England under the reigns of William I and William II.
