Basilica of San Silvestro

undefined

The small San Silvestro Basilica, located in Androna dei Grigioni next to the largest church in Santa Maria Maggiore, fascinates visitors with its ancient appearance and its undeniable and unobtrusive grace. Until the discovery of the early Christian basilica in Via Madonna del Mare in the 1960s, the San Silvestro Basilica was considered the oldest place of worship in the city. Tradition has it that its foundations are located on the birthplace of the martyrs Thecla and Euphemia, although scholars consider it unlikely. Due to its peculiar characteristics and its historical importance, the San Silvestro Basilica has been declared a national monument. Today the Basilica is a place of worship for the Evangelical Reformed Community, which includes both the Swiss and Waldensian communities.
